Many countries require that a U.S. Citizen present their passport in order to gain entry their state or territory. Also, a document indicating proof of citizenship is always required to re-enter the United States. In some instances (Mexico, Canada, etc.), a valid driver's license and a birth certificate will suffice as the proof of citizenship; however, as indicated, many countries require a passport to gain entry to their country and the United States State Department "recommends" a passport as evidence of citizenship in ALL cases.
Some countries require that your U.S. passport be valid at least 6 months or longer beyond the dates of your trip. If your passport expires before the required validity, you will have to apply for a new one. Please check with the Embassy or nearest Consulate of the country that you plan to visit for their requirements.
Effective January 23, 2007, all U.S. citizens traveling by air to and from Bermuda and the Caribbean are required to have a valid passport to enter the United States.
As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and Bermuda/Caribbean by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries. American citizen travelers are encouraged to apply for a U.S. passport, or the passport card when it becomes available, well in advance of anticipated travel.
Make a note of the passport number, date and place of issue (or take a photocopy), and keep separately in a safe place.
Check the passport expiry date.
Write the full details of your next of kin in your passport.
Leave a photocopy with a friend or relative at home.
Take a second means of photo-identification with you.
Keep your passport in the hotel safe and carry a photocopy with you.
If your passport is lost or stolen overseas, contact the nearest British Embassy, High Commission or Consulate immediately for advice.
